GA4 for lead generation: the events worth configuring
Twelve events, not two hundred. Configured once, properly.
Fewer events, better defined
GA4 tempts teams into tracking everything, which produces dashboards nobody trusts. We configure around a dozen events that map to real business moments and ignore the rest. If an event would never change a decision, it should not exist.
The core set
Form start and form submit, separately — the gap between them is your single most actionable diagnostic. Phone and email clicks. WhatsApp click, which matters enormously for Indian businesses. Quote or pricing view. Case study view. Scroll to 75% on key pages. File download. And outbound clicks to your booking tool.
Define conversions honestly
Mark only the events that represent genuine intent as key events. A newsletter signup is not a lead. If your sales team qualifies enquiries, get that status back into the data — even a weekly CSV import beats optimising ad spend toward unqualified form fills.
Reports we actually check
Landing page performance segmented by channel. Form start versus submit by device — mobile drop-off is usually a field or validation problem. Path exploration for the pages preceding an enquiry. And organic landing pages joined against Search Console queries.
Get consent right
Consent Mode v2 configured properly, with a banner that does not destroy your CLS. Then connect it to the plan — see the 90-day SEO plan for how measurement sequences, and where Ads budget leaks for why conversion definitions matter so much.
